I wish I could give these boots 3.5 or 3.8 stars... I think they deserve more than 3 but aren't quite at a 4 rating. First, let me say I own a lot of leather boots and wear high, medium and low heels regularly, so I have many boots to compare to these.
I wore them for about 10 hours today, the day they arrived. I mostly sit at work, but I had a bit of a trek to an assignment and it's a pretty long walk to the break room and ladies' room. I also have to switch desks in the office when I work Saturdays, so my feet aren't just dangling from a chair all day. An uncomfortable pair of boots will be very, very uncomfortable after a day like today.
There is no give or flex to the sole of these boots, so I thought they would be uncomfortable, but I wasn't dying to tear them off at the end of the night like some boots.
The size 9 boots I ordered run big compared to other 9s. Anyone with a wide foot will enjoy the extra room. Because the heel and sole are pretty heavy, they felt a little clunky at first, but that didn't bother me as the day wore on. I thought I might end up with a chaffed spot or even a blister from them moving around (like I have with other boots in the past) but that didn't happen. They very much surprised me with their comfort factor, because my initial impression was not good.
I ordered the silver (grey) color, and while I'm happy with the color, it is inconsistent between the toe/instep and shaft. The toe/instep portion of the boot is smooth leather, and the grey has a bluish tint. The shaft is a rougher leather, almost suede-like in parts (although it's thick leather), and the color is more... purplish? It's hard to describe, but the tomes are very different. The distressed finish is very nice, but the black across the toe could be more rounded in shape to look more natural. Again, that was clear from the pics, so not a surprise to me. I may work my own magic to round out the shape of the black aged finish. I like the toe has this dark color over the grey to make it easier to deal with scuffs.
I have what I think are average size calves, and these are almost too tight for my legs with jeans. If you have full or wide calves, consider using these as a slouch boot. They are soft enough for it, and look fine in the slouched position if you're into that look.
The quality of the constructions seems ok - stitches look tight and straight, everything is lined up nicely and the sole is nice and thick and looks like it will take some wear. However, one of the fake stacked leather heels (a common way heels have been designed for decades, with faux strips of leather over a block, or stack-like stripes molded into plastic) has a flaw on mine. It looks like they're leather strips covering the block, and one of the strips was cut short and a tiny part of the block is exposed. I'm going to seal this with glue so it doesn't start to peel back.
The distressed finish gives them some rough and porous spots, meaning they will get much darker if I use mink oil on them. A silicone spray might not do that, but it's hard to say. Make your own decisions about this.
Note: they are not made with real shearling - it's faux fur, and they are not lined with it, unlike the description. I knew that ahead of ordering as one of the pics shows the sticker on the bottom of the boot which has this information. Hopefully, Amazon will update this false info in the ad. Without the faux fur lining, they still felt a bit warm after 7-8 hours of wear in my office, worn over panty hose and mostly cotton socks.
I'm not sure how well I like the faux shearling look, but the trim on the sides would be easy enough to - carefully - trim away with a Xacto blade from the underside of the seam. The top is another story as an unfinished edge would be visible.
Also note these are pull-on boots with no zipper. To me, this was one of the selling points because zippers fail long before genuine leather will. However, that also means the shaft is not as fitted looking as some boots, and they're loose in the ankle. This adds to their comfort, but might not look the way some may expect with zip-up, fitted boots. The result is a casual look.
Overall, I like the boots, especially since they are a different style and color than most of the others in my collection. If I had paid a lot more for them, I don't think I'd be as pleased, but for $112, I think I got a nice, stylish leather boot that will last many years and will probably be repairable down the road as time takes their toll (one of the many reasons I only buy leather boots and shoes - they last and can be made to last with some care and maintenance). I can also dye them black if I get sick of the color or if they get dirty, but it looks like this finish will hold up to the elements pretty well.
Bottom line: don't expect the world and you might end up loving these boots.
